a northern virginia man staged a violent incident at johns hopkins hospital in baltimore. police say he shot a doctor and then shot and kill his mother and then turned the gun on himself. this morning, that doctors recovering and now the gunman's family says he was likely overcome with grief about his mother's condition. sarah joins us with more on this. >> police say paul warren pardus became so upset when he heard about his mother's condition, he shot the surgeon. the wounded surgeon was shot in the abdomen. pardus barr indicatedded himself in the room with his mother. >> my boss came running in and he told me what happened, that there is a guy running around with a gun. and to stay put. it was carey -- scary knowing that somebody was running around with a gun on a rampage in a place where we're supposed to be protected. >> this morning, johns hopkin is operating as normal. >> pardus lived in south arlington with his mother in this home along south kenmore street. neighbors described him as friendly and quiet. they say he and to be his mother's

from the outer banks. virginia beach hit hard and maryland area and beaches in delaware seeing the strongest winds. the storm tracks off the coast for the most part. the heaviest winds and rain offshore and the big waves doing the damage along the coast and the pictures you will see. we have hurricane warnings up for areas of cape cod and the hurricane center thinks it's possible to make a direct impact out on the cape. it is looking more unlikely and still a hurricane warning so we have to wait until they drop that, maybe they'll do that at 11:00. as far as the waves go, 23-foot waves right now of virginia beach. that forecast track takes it parallel to the coast today. don't expect a big increase of the winds today in maryland and delaware. jersey area, long island seeing worse today and right off of cape cod later tonight. here's how it looks. as far as the storm goes, the center of the circles where it's located. heaviest of the rains along the jersey shore, new england 2:00 to 4:00 today and then the worst exiting jersey shore about 6:00. racing up the coast for cape cod,

the largest storm on the planet. about the sides of north carolina, south carolina and virginia combined. hard to miss it on radar. you see it on enhanced radar imagery, it's just off the coast of the carolinas. i can tell you the first impact on the united states is heavy surf. in terms of power ali was talking about moments ago, 145-mile-an-hour max sustained winds. gusts at 175. and this powerhouse is expected to roar its way to the north. where exactly is it going to go? according to the path of the hurricane center, the storm is expected to make a northerly jog over the next two days. by 2:00 in the morning on friday, should be just east of the outer banks. this thing say huge storm. so many people in the carolina coast dealing with heavy winds, of course, strong surf, tremendous waves. there will be millions without power before all said and done. as the storm is expected to move through, a category 3 storm. early saturday morning, a category 2 storm, perhaps, just off the coast cape cod with winds of 100 miles per hour. keep in mind these storms are very fickle and may jog out closer to

eastern virginia and then again, come friday, a threat to southeast new england, mainly the cape. a little early to tell specifically for the cape, but they're doing the right thing in the carolinas, getting the tourists out of the area. bill: it's moving at a pretty quick clip. 16 miles an hour, that's almost lightning speed for a storm this size. what are you telling the folks in north carolina that are watching now? >> reporter: well, it's actually a fairly typical speed as one comes down there and i don't think it will speed up a whole lot until it gets even with them. the watches that are currently in effect are going to have to be upgraded sometime today to a warning. they're doing all the right actions, they've been getting the people alerted as of yesterday, and they're starting to move the high risk communities that only have one way out and flood at a very low tide, they're already having those folks move, so i think we're in good shape on the sense of what the threat is in the market carolina, southeast virginia area. bill: bill, thank you very much. i know you guys are working

. and hurricane watches from virginia to delaware. correspondent jonathan serrie is live in hill devil hills, north carolina, with an update. >> reporter: you can see the red flags that the lifeguards have been installing on the beach. it's been a beautiful sunny day here, they are worried about the heavier than usual surf in the atlantic and potentially riptides. earlier today, the lifeguards had to go out and rescue a surfer who could not bat the rip tides. they got him to shore safely. as you look at some of the cottages along the beaches, not seeing any of the boarding up that you normally would, if they were anticipating a direct hit from the hurricane. as you look at the path of the hurricane, the forecasters believe the eye of the storm will stay out to sea. nevertheless, the category four hurricane is a particularly strong storm. and so they are anticipating at least tropical storm force winds where i'm standing right now. potentially hurricane force winds. so many residents and visitors not wanting to take any chances. those who are not leaving the islands are stocking up on food, w

on to virginia. republican line. good morning. caller: yes. we have where i live at we have three pen ten sharies here and there's over a thousand inmates there. and the state -- the tax people pay i hear anywhere from $16,000 to $25,000 a year. and that's not right for us to pay that kind of money for -- to how's those inmates. host: how many jobs do you think those three produce for that area? caller: very few. host: whether or not do you say that? caller: because it's a low income county and stuff. the only thing that keeps our county going is the coal mines and stuff. host: ok. did you have more to add? caller: i would just like, like i said, $25,000 that taxpayers pay to keep the inmate in jail. and just like i said, they need to get those inmates out and bring our soldiers back home from afghanistan and train those prisoners over there for two or three weeks and send them over there. host: according to the national public radio, in 2006 the it cost about $68 billion for corrections. the average cost per state inmate was $22,000 or about $62 per day among facilities operated by the federal b

. the republican candidate in virginia for governor we through a scalding campaign because of what he'd written as a student and all that have was sort of revived during that. so he has a fair point this ought to be, both candidates ought to be revived. but my point here is on christine o'donnell, i think the reason why she's now, she's burst into the spotlight as the the woman who probably cost the republicans their chance at winning the senate. she is going to certainly contribute to a fear among republicans about crossing lines and working with democrats as mike castle did. voting for cap and trade, as he did, and have that bring him down sends a very big signal that it's going to be extremely hard to govern and form bipartisan majorities no matter who wins in these elections. and finally, this election with her, you know, is probably going to drive or draw a lot of the republican candidates for president, you know this, draw them to the right. we're going to -- mitt romney was described in the financial times today as the guy who really lost tuesday night because he's too moderate. mitt rom
